EXCERPT

My mind unwillingly drifts back to that night.  Things were finally going good in my life. Done with foster care, old enough to branch out on my own, leaving behind the reminder that my parents did not want me.  I moved in with my best friend Becky. Even got myself a job in a coffee shop-- the pay wasn’t much, but it was mine.  Becky decided to throw me a party at her boyfriend’s club to celebrate both me moving in and my birthday, since I had just turned eighteen.  We had known each other for a few years after meeting at a previous foster home.  Her stay was brief while her parents sorted themselves out, but like Megan, she took me under her wing and urged me out of my shyness. I was moved on shortly after she left, never staying in one place longer than a few months. Not because of my behaviour, but due to my violet eyes, which people found too unnerving.  Thank you, parents, not only did you abandon me, but you made sure no one else wanted me either.
Getting ready for the party that night, Becky had lent me a gorgeous silver dress, smooth and silky, clinging in all the right places. Far more expensive than anything I could afford.  She matched it with a pair of three- inch heels, because let’s face it, I could do with the extra height.  At five- foot- four I am tiny, along with my skinny frame lacking all those womanly curves most girls have. I need all the help I can get when it comes to impressing the male population.  Twirling in front of the mirror, I actually looked quite good, feminine.  Maybe I will find my first boyfriend after all.
We headed to the club. A little unsteady on the heels, I hold on to Becky for support.  The place was packed, and even though my nerves were going double time, Becky kept dragging me to various guys to dance with them.  The alcohol she kept forcing down my throat was taking effect, and I headed off to the bathroom, dizziness making me even more unsteady in the heels.  Pushing through the crowd of people, I trip, stumbling into someone.
“There’s the birthday girl!” Mike, Becky’s boyfriend says, steadying me.
The contact instantly brings me out in chills as he leers down at me. Mike has always made me a little uncomfortable.
“Can I give the birthday girl a kiss?” he asks.
I shudder, offering him my cheek. His hand grips my behind, yanking me against his body, while his other hand grips my chin.  He crushes his mouth against mine, slobbering all over me. Shoving him away, I wipe furiously at my face as I push through the crowd in search of Becky.  I spot her standing with her friends, and several of the guys I have been dancing with. I tell her what her boyfriend has just done to me, and she looks at me with disgust.
“Why the hell would he want someone like you, Callie?  Look at you! You can’t even afford the dress you are wearing, let alone fill it out,” she snaps angrily as her friends snicker beside her.
Humiliated, I kick off the heels, running barefoot through the club as tears blur my vision. Bursting out onto the street, I crash into something solid, huge arms steadying me. I remember looking up—seeing that beautiful face as he reached down, wiping the tears from my face gently.  He offered to walk with me, saying a young girl like me shouldn’t be out alone at night, and that he wouldn’t let his own daughter walk the streets alone.  Reassured by the fact that he had his own daughter and that he was insanely hot, I let him walk with me, even though no destination was decided.  We continued further away from the club, while I stole glances at his face. The knowing smile that spreads across it has me blushing as we turn the corner into a dark alley.  I am oblivious to my surroundings, distracted by his beauty. Maybe I would have seen what was coming as he turned towards me, but my gaze travelled to his lips, desperate to feel them on mine. That was until he punched me in the face, and the world went black.
